Explore our premium industrial chucks, boring heads, and static/driven tool holders designed for high-performance CNC setups.
In subtractive manufacturing, internal thread cutting (tapping) remains one of the most critical and risk-prone stages. Unlike milling or turning, where tool engagement is external, tapping fully encapsulates the tap within the workpiece. A sudden torque spike, chip accumulation, or slight feed-pitch synchronization error can cause catastrophic tap breakage, scrapping highly valuable machined components.
Our heavy-duty, industrial-grade tapping attachments act as a mechanical buffer. Equipped with micro-adjustable tension-compression springs and safety ball-clutches, these systems compensate for axial feed discrepancy while limiting max cutting torque. This guarantees reliable, high-speed thread cycles across CNC centers, multi-spindle rigs, and manual drill presses.
Our torque limiting system stops the tap immediately upon bottoming out or encountering foreign matter, cutting your tool replacement costs by up to 80% and mitigating downtime in fully automated assembly lines.
Precision internal threading is a fundamental requirement in global value chains. Tapping attachments are highly utilized across various sectors:
We offer comprehensive customization. Adjust axial compensation length, torque limits, coolant routing (radial/thru-spindle), and machine mounts (BT40, HSK63A, Morse Taper, VDI, or custom tool holder configurations).

Understanding the mechanical properties and treatment protocols that separate high-durability tapping tools from entry-level products.
We source ultra-pure 40CrNiMo (AISI 4340) and 20CrMnTi tool steels. These alloys exhibit excellent core toughness combined with high hardenability, preventing shank deformation and housing cracks under high torsion load.
Tapping components are gas-carburized to achieve a surface hardness of HRC 58-62 while maintaining a robust, impact-absorbent core (HRC 35-40). This dual-phase steel structure prevents brittle failures during sudden tap seizures.
CNC rigid tapping can experience pitch synchronization errors during rapid reversal cycles. Our micro-tension-compression mechanism provides up to 0.5mm axial float, absorbing spindle errors and avoiding thread stripping.
The actual torque required for cutting internal threads depends heavily on the workpiece material, the pitch, the thread depth, and the core hole diameter. For example, tapping stainless steel (AISI 316) requires up to three times the torque compared to tapping standard structural steel (ASTM A36).
Without an adjustable torque safety clutch, the tapping tool will attempt to drive past its mechanical threshold, causing tap breakage. Our ODM line uses a ball-detent mechanical safety clutch system that acts in milliseconds, disengaging the driving spindle from the cutting head when the pre-adjusted threshold is crossed.
As global industries move toward complete multi-tasking (mill-turn) centers, static tool systems are being supplemented by radial and axial driven tool units. Standard tapping chucks must now be lighter and more compact to fit inside complex, high-density live tool turrets.
Ricon’s engineering team has designed integrated VDI and BMT tapping systems that fit perfectly onto platforms like Doosan and Haas. This eliminates modular stack-up errors, improves overall rigidity, and keeps runout values below 0.005mm.
Get answers to critical design, operations, and setup questions regarding tapping attachments and machine integrations.
Rigid Tapping (Synchronous Tapping): This occurs when the CNC machine spindle rotation and Z-axis feed are electronic/mechanically synchronized down to the microsecond. The pitch feed matches the tap exactly.
Tension-Compression Tapping: For older or less precise CNC machinery, or during high-acceleration cycles, synchronization errors can occur. A tension-compression attachment provides a mechanical "buffer" (axial float). This float absorbs the synchronization discrepancy, preventing axial stress on the tap threads, reducing wear, and eliminating cross-threading.
Our safety clutch tapping attachments feature an adjustable torque sleeve with scale markings. To adjust the torque:
We support deep customization for OEM/ODM batches of machine tool accessories. This includes tailoring shanks (BT, CAT, DIN, HSK, straight shanks, VDI), adapting collet receivers (ER, rubber-flex), customizing internal spring-compression dynamics, implementing high-pressure through-coolant pathways, and applying specific wear-resistant surface treatments (black oxide, nickel plating, PVD coating).
Runout causes the tap to rotate slightly off-center, leading to oversized threads, uneven flank wear, and premature tap breakage. Ricon Tools maintains a runout tolerance of less than 0.005mm on our premium tapping holders. This ensures equal chip load distribution across all cutting flutes, maximizing tool life and guaranteeing that the finished thread meets class H or ISO 2G/3G tolerances.
